Fed: Timeline for boat saga
Evolution of the MS Tampa boat people saga:
Aug 23 - Norwegian-registered freighter MS Tampa leaves Fremantle bound for Singapore.
Aug 24 - Indonesia fishing boat KM Palapa 1 sets sail from western Indonesia with 438
asylum seekers on board.
Aug 25 - Australian Coastwatch flight spots KM Palapa 1, apparently in distress, notifies
Indonesia.
Aug 26 - Coastwatch staff spot distress signal from the sinking fishing boat 148km
off Christmas Island. Mayday issued.
Aug 26 - Tampa answers distress, picking up boat people.
Aug 26 - Tampa set to head for nearby port in Indonesia but some of those picked up
threaten to jump overboard if the ship does not head for Christmas Island.
Aug 27 - Australian government refuses the Tampa entry into Australian waters.
Aug 27 - PM John Howard says matter "must be resolved between the government of Indonesia
and the government of Norway".
Aug 27 - Indonesia and Norway say they will not accept the asylum seekers.
Aug 27 - Most asylum seekers begin hunger strike.
Aug 28 - Tampa anchors 22km off Christmas Island just outside Australian waters as
captain awaits instructions from Norway.
Aug 28 - Australia sends HMAS Arunta to Christmas Island, and lands SAS personnel on
the island in anticipation of deploying humanitarian aid.
Aug 28 - International aid agencies urge Australia, Norway and Indonesia to resolve the issue.
Aug 29 - Tampa enters Australian waters after issuing a mayday call, concerned some
of the asylum seekers are about to jump overboard.
Aug 29 - SAS personnel on Zodiacs intercept the Tampa, going aboard and taking control
of the ship. An Australian Defence Force doctor says there are no major health issues
among the 438 asylum seekers.
Aug 29 - Labor Party says it backs government's actions.
