McCann Worldgroup Study: Today's Global Youth Would Give Up Their Sense of Smell to Keep Their Technology
Type: News
McCann Worldgroup released the findings of The Truth about Youth, a quantitative study of 7000 16-30 year olds conducted in April 2011 across 7 markets UK, USA, Spain, China, India, Brazil and Mexico which was then confirmed qualitatively in 17 markets globally.
The study examined the motivations of young people around the world and sought to uncover what makes them different from every generation that has come before.
What emerged was a view of the first truly global generation, fueled and empowered by technology and motivated by the same three fundamental needs: Commune (the need for connection, relationships, and community), Justice (the need for social or personal justice, to do what's right, to be an activist), and Authenticity (the need to see things as they are). These motivations drive behaviors that transcend borders.
Laura Simpson, Global IQ Director for McCann Worldgroup, said of the study, "What we saw is that technology is the great global unifier. It is the glue that binds this generation together and fuels the motivations that define them." She continued, "Young people utilize technology as a kind of supersense which connects them to infinite knowledge, friends and entertainment opportunities."
The truths uncovered by McCann Worldgroup included the following:
Technology as a Fifth Sense
While technology has often been referred to in jest as an appendage of today's youth, over half (53 percent) of 16-22 year olds said they would rather give up their sense of smell than give up their technology. For this generation, technology is not an add- on. It is a tool that enables them to sense the world and make sense of the world.
The Social Economy has Replaced the Experience Economy
In the Material Economy people defined themselves primarily via what they owned. In the Experience Economy people became more focused on what they'd seen or done (supposedly valuing memories as much as material possessions). McCann Worldgroup's research found that for young people today it's increasingly all about the Social Economy; who you connect with and what you share. As one respondent put it "if there are no pics, it didn't happen."
Whereas past generations focused on maintaining a small group of friends, relationships between youth today are much more complex. Using social media, a typical teenager is likely to manage and maintain multiple, intersecting groups of friends. In this sense, "connecting" to a broader network of friends has replaced the singular need to "belong" to a tight knit group of friends. This is the "strategic generation" who effortlessly manages different identities, evaluates the usefulness of specific connections and occasionally strips back those who no longer make the grade.
McCann Worldgroup found that 47 percent of the youth globally want to be remembered for their connections.
Hunting for Truth
Asked which values they seek in a best friend, young people globally opted for 'truthful', chosen by 42 percent and rated nearly twice as important as the next most important value ('genuine', chosen by 22 percent). "Truthful" is also the top word young people apply to themselves with 21 percent globally choosing this as a personal descriptor.
Truth is currency in the social economy. The democratic nature of the internet invites information, opinion and rumor in equal measure. The laws of supply and demand apply. The rarity of truth increases its value.
Justice Re-Imagined
Justice is the second most important motivator for young people (rated as 'very important' by 52 percent of young people globally). And the thing that young people are most likely to say that they are 'good at' globally is 'knowing right from wrong' (44 percent). A large percentage of youth say that the thing they most want to be remembered for is changing the world in a positive way.
Young people around the world are very aware of how social media tools can be and are being harnessed in the quest for social justice. They are using these very tools to re-imagine how justice works and how they can take action.
McCann Worldgroup delivers marketing solutions that transform brands and grow businesses.

QLD:Qld mum unfit for trial for stabbing son
BRISBANE, Dec 6 AAP - A woman has been ruled unfit to stand trial over the attempted
murder of her 11-year-old son.
In a Mental Health Court judgment made public on Monday, Justice Ann Lyons ordered
the woman - who cannot be named - be detained for psychiatric treatment with the Sunshine
Coast Mental Health Service.
During the hearing in September, the Brisbane court was told the mother had stabbed
her son in the chest while he slept in the lounge room on December 19 last year.
It is alleged the mother screamed that she couldn't handle it anymore, before stabbing herself.
She was disarmed before being taken to Nambour Hospital and admitted to the Mental Health ward.
The court was told she had a long history with the Mental Health Service and had been
suicidal in the week before the alleged attack on her son.

Fed: Gillard's megaportfolio needs back up: Greens
ADELAIDE, April 29 AAP - The overburdened Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard needs
back up to deliver on higher education commitments, the Australian Greens say.
Greens education spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young has called for a parliamentary secretary
to ease the burden on Ms Gillard - who also holds the employment, workplace relations
and social inclusion portfolios, as well as education.
In a speech to the annual Higher Education summit in Adelaide on Thursday, Senator
Hanson-Young said she hoped education would be top of the agenda in the upcoming federal
budget.
"After all, education is fundamental pillar of our society crucial to our social and
economic progress as a nation," she said at the Summit.
"The Greens are today calling for the establishment of a higher education parliamentary
secretary who can hear the concerns of the sector directly and action their feedback."

Queensland Premier ANNA BLIGH has slammed claims that business observers at Labor's

them on who they were to meet with at last year's conference.

Ms BLIGH has told ABC Radio the email came from a woman in the party office who coordinated

NSW: MPs urged to return to parliament with 10,000 jobs gone
By Nick Ralston, State Political Reporter
SYDNEY, Feb 12 AAP - The NSW government is being urged to recall parliament early to
devise a stimulus package after the latest job figures showed 10,300 people lost their
jobs in the state during January.
The state's unemployment rate grew in January to 5.4 per cent from the 5.2 per cent
recorded in December and from the 4.5 per cent figure a year ago.
NSW is also above the national jobless rate of 4.8 per cent, Australian Bureau of Statistics
data shows.
Premier Nathan Rees said any increase in the jobless rate was a cause for concern but
"we are in the face of a global recession".
The state government has previously announced a two-day jobs summit that will be held
later this month.
But opposition treasury spokesman Mike Baird said Mr Rees and Treasurer Eric Roozendaal
had been too slow to act and 10,300 NSW residents had now lost jobs since December.
"They have been aware that this global financial crisis has been coming for a considerable
period," Mr Baird told reporters.
"They put together a mini-budget .. that stifled the economy and we are starting to
see the consequences.
"People are losing their jobs while Nathan Rees and Eric Roozendaal do nothing about it."
Mr Baird said that if the government wanted to do something meaningful it should recall
MPs back after the Christmas break before the scheduled resumption date of March 3.
"I think that any government that was taking the global financial crisis seriously
would have parliament back and they would be talking about what we could do in this state,"
he said.
"I certainly think there would be a lot of sense in parliament resuming."
However, Mr Rees said there had already been 250 people registered for his job summit
and the government would now have to move it to a larger venue.
The NSW Business Chamber has echoed Mr Baird's calls, saying the NSW economy desperately
needed a boost.
"The business community has been calling on the NSW government for months for a program
to kick-start the NSW economy and that call has now become even more urgent," chamber
chief executive Kevin MacDonald said.
"Premier Rees must use the upcoming jobs summit to turn NSW's lagging fortunes around,
otherwise the 10,000 people who joined the unemployment line in the last month won't be
the last."
Mr MacDonald said NSW businesses were crying out for tax cuts.

KEVIN RUDD will have his environmental homework set out for him in a new report card

For an A grade .. the prime minister will have to meet a list of 10 tasks to address
climate change .. over his first term in government.
Greenpeace spokesman STEVE CAMPBELL says the first box has been ticked with the ratification
of the Kyoto protocol.
But he says for most of the climate change talks in Bali .. the government sat on the
fence over its support for up to 40 per cent emissions cuts.
Mr CAMPBELL says Mr RUDD talked the talk .. but failed to walk the walk.
He says a Greenpeace newspoll conducted last week showed 86 per cent of people want
binding greenhouse emission targets in place over the next three years.

Queensland police will turn their attention to the brakes of a bus today that crashed
on the Gold Coast yesterday injuring all 24 people on board.
The tourist bus ended on its side after sliding down an embankment .. as it tried to
take a tight corner on Tamborine-Oxenford Road near Coomera yesterday afternoon.
Four ambulances were called to the scene and 11 passengers were taken to hospital.
FLU (BRISBANE)
A group of Gold Coast primary students on excursion to Canberra are expected to return
home this weekend after an Influenza outbreak during the trip.
39 children and seven adults from Marymount Primary School at Burleigh Heads were taken
to Canberra Hospital yesterday with flu symptoms .. after becoming ill during the excursion.
ACT health authorities say 12 children were sent to hospital .. five children tested
positive to Influenza A .. and the rest have been treated at their hotel by doctors and
nurses.
WORKPLACE ADS (SYDNEY)
Canberra's latest advertising blitz is reportedly reinforcing fears over its Work Choices
reforms .. rather than dispelling them.
A research firm says worker reactions to the ads with Workplace Authority director
BARBARA BENNETT are raising worries amongst employees .. rather than busting any myths
about the IR changes.
Essential Research has told The Australian newspaper .. rather than taking away the
fear of the new laws .. the ads' unintended side effect is that people get even more worried.
Meanwhile .. details of the federal government's takeover of a Tasmanian hospital will

Qld: Mass screenings starts over HIV fear
Patients being mass screened for the deadly HIV virus in a north Queensland community
have come out in support of the female dentist at the centre of the health scare.
But officials say there are no known cases of transmission of HIV in Australia between
a dentist and a patient.
More than 600 people .. including a large number of children .. are expected to be
tested over the next week after the Bowen-based dentist .. employed by Queensland Health
.. tested HIV positive.
Queensland Health chief health officer JEANNETTE YOUNG says 549 patients had been treated
by the dentist at Bowen and Collinsville hospitals since December 15 last year.
That figure is expected to incresae significantly though .. with the total number of
children examined by the dentist at school clinics in the region yet to be determined.
Even though there's some criticism .. many patients have rallied behind the dentist
.. offering words of encouragement and support ..san some saying everybody loves her.

Fed: Authorities clear Santa through Australian airspace
CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - Santa is ready to roll with his annual delivery of Christmas
presents to Australian children thanks to some help from aviation authorities.
Santa Claus had lodged his preliminary flight plan for the Australian leg of his Christmas
Eve global operation, Airservices Australia said today.
But this year it is understood he has installed new navigation and tracking technology
known as Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, which should allow air traffic controllers
their best ever analysis of the flight.
"Airservices Australia is trying to ensure safe and efficient passage for Santa through
Australian Airspace this Christmas," an Airservices spokesman said.
"We are responding to a direct request from Santa, as in recent years his job has become
increasingly more difficult with heavier loads and time constraints.
"As with previous years, we will be monitoring Santa's flight but will be giving him
a fairly free rein around Australian airspace.
"Our main job will be to keep all other aircraft away from him, so he can get through
his incredibly tight schedule and we can concentrate on getting everybody to their destinations."
The spokesman said Santa had opted to use a Flex Track flight path to help take advantage
of high-level tail winds, reducing reindeer energy consumption and cutting his overall
flight time.
Airservices has developed a new website to help the children and mums and dads check
Santa's pre-Christmas activities and his global delivery flight into Australia.
The site, at www.airservicesaustralia.com/santa05, already contains updates from air
traffic controllers in the Northern Hemisphere on unusual airborne activity around the
North Pole.

Expert Presenters Will Energize NAHP's Hispanic Publisher's Convention in Las Vegas With Wide-Range of How-To Panels and Seminars, March 19-22.
Business Editors
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2003
Some of the nation's most authoritative speakers in the publishing industry will be presenting a wide range of dynamic panels and seminars at the 2003 National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) convention in Las Vegas March 19-22.
The convention will feature two tracks of in-depth seminars presented by the National Hispanic Press Foundation: editorial and design, and sales and marketing.
Highlights of the editorial and design track include:
"Syndicated Columns & Features." This panel promises to unveil some of the business secrets of syndication. Charlie Ericksen, who along with his late wife Sebastiana Mendoza and their son Hector Ericksen-Mendoza, co-founded the 24-year-old Hispanic Link News Service, will moderate the presentation. Gary Neeleman of Tribune Media Services and Hernan Guaracao of Al Dia will explain how syndicates function and how publishers can best use syndication services. The New York Times Syndicate has been invited to detail its latest product -- a new Spanish-language syndicated column.
Participants in "Finding, Training and Retaining Good Staff" will get insights into successful staffing. Mundo Hispanico's Lino Dominguez will share the secrets of his long-time successes with staff while Jose del Castillo of El Mensajero will discuss how to use the Internet to find good candidates. In the same seminar Zita Arocha will highlight a new University of Texas journalism program designed to train bicultural journalists to cover the communities they serve.
The bilingual seminar "Escribiendo Efectivamente para Atraer Lectores" or "Effective Writing to Attract Readership" is a sure bet, especially with El Tiempo Latino's Alberto Avendano as moderator. One of Al Dia's most talented journalists, Alonso Heredia, will discuss what makes for good writing, and La Opinion's editor Geraldo Lopez has also been invited. Andres Penuelas, of Total World Company, will review how to strengthen editorial writing for advertising supplements.
On the marketing side, a number of strategic seminars will be offered for this track.
With the generous support of Verizon, the Hispanic Press Foundation is pleased to offer "Audits: A Publisher's Best Friend," a seminar complementing our current campaign "Audit Means Money." Verizon Foundation executive Bob Bishop will moderate the seminar. Panelists include Certified Audits of Circulation's Mark Stoecklin and Verified Audit Circulation's T.D. Clark. They will explain an audit's role in promoting circulation and in selling ads. Circulation Verification Council and Audit Bureau of Circulation representatives are also likely to be on hand. Additionally, The Sunflower Group's Dennis Garberg will give an ad agency's view on audits; Best Buy's Marsha Lawrence will lend a large corporate advertiser's view; and La Opinion's Francisco Lozano has been invited to tell of his long-time audited member publisher's experiences.
One of the fastest-paced and exciting programs will be the Advertising Roulette Round Table. This small group discussion with ad reps, corporate media buyers and publishers will provide great insight into the industry's advertising campaigns. The panel will be moderated by La Raza's Associate Publisher Robert Armband.
Other winning marketing seminars include "Newspaper Partnerships with Large Retailers" sponsored by Kmart as well as "Selling Hispanic Print to Major Corporate Accounts" and "Advertising Sales Manager Training."
Technology will also be a strong focus of seminars in both the editorial and marketing tracks as seminars will be held on using the Web to gather news and how to best work with news distribution services.
Hispanic PR Wire President Manny Ruiz will show you the nuts and bolts of how moving your publication to the web doesn't have to be a gamble. Teaching publications how to use technology to save time and make money will be a topic of the seminar "Using Technology to Make Money." Yupi.com's George Levy will moderate the panel. Mitra Setayesh, a marketing consultant for Hispanic print, will discuss what works best in the industry. La Opinion's Mary Zerafa has also been invited to share her expertise.
Other important draws include a presentation by Eastern Group Publication's Jonathan Sanchez and Latino Journal's Jose Perez who have developed a new model for working with state legislatures and agencies to mandate and build strategic partnerships for reaching minority populations through Hispanic print. And for those looking for an in-depth seminar on key points for marketing to Hispanics -- Kirk Whisler's "60 Keys for Marketing to Hispanics" is an excellent education.
